Batticaloa Teaching Hospital witnessed a shocking incident early Sunday (23rd), where an 18-year-old student, after secretly giving birth in the hospital restroom, threw her newborn out of the window.
Fortunately, the infant survived and is currently receiving medical care, according to hospital sources.
Incident Details:
The young woman, a high school student from a nearby area, had been admitted to the hospital’s emergency unit around 3:30 AM, complaining of severe abdominal pain.
Unbeknownst to the medical staff, she was in full-term pregnancy but had not disclosed her condition.
Instead of conducting a proper examination, the attending doctors assumed she was suffering from general stomach pain.
They collected a urine sample for testing and administered pain relief medication.
At around 5:00 AM, the student went to the restroom, where she unexpectedly delivered the baby. In a shocking turn of events, she threw the newborn out of the restroom window.
The infant landed on a platform below, where its cries alerted the nurses on duty.
Upon discovering the baby, medical staff rushed to provide emergency care, placing the newborn in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
The mother was also given necessary medical attention. Batticaloa Teaching Hospital Director, Mrs. Kalaranjini Ganeshalingam, confirmed that both the baby and the mother are currently in stable condition.
Meanwhile, hospital police have launched further investigations into the incident.
