20 Sri Lankan Prisoners Return from Kuwait Under Inmate Transfer Agreement

In a significant development, 20 Sri Lankan prisoners who had been serving sentences in Kuwait for various crimes were repatriated to Sri Lanka today.

According to sources at the Bandaranaike International Airport, the prisoners were flown in on a special flight this afternoon as part of the Kuwait-Sri Lanka prisoner exchange agreement.

The prisoner transfer agreement between the two nations was initially signed in 2007. Under this agreement, Sri Lanka received its first batch of repatriated inmates in 2024, when 32 Sri Lankan prisoners were handed over.

The latest group of returnees had been incarcerated in Kuwait’s central prison for offenses related to drug possession, drug trafficking, and distribution. They were apprehended by Kuwaiti security forces, prosecuted in court, and sentenced accordingly.

This transfer marks another step in the ongoing collaboration between Sri Lanka and Kuwait in handling legal and judicial matters concerning citizens detained abroad.
