Air Force Training Aircraft Crashes in Wariyapola – Pilots Eject Safely


Special Investigation Team Appointed Following Fiery Crash
 
A K-8 training aircraft belonging to the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) crashed this morning in the Wariyapola Minuwangete area due to a technical malfunction. The aircraft was completely destroyed after catching fire upon impact, Air Force Spokesman Group Captain Eranda Keerthinayake confirmed.
 
Pilots Eject in Time, Land Safely
 
The two pilots onboard managed to eject safely using parachutes and landed near the Minuwangete Vidyalaya school grounds in Padenya. Both officers were immediately transferred to Kurunegala General Hospital for medical attention. Hospital sources confirmed that their condition is stable and not life-threatening.
 
Aircraft Engulfed in Flames Upon Impact
 
The aircraft crashed into a coconut plantation, where it was entirely engulfed in flames. To assist in rescue and recovery efforts, the Air Force deployed two helicopters to the crash site and the area where the pilots landed.
 
Special Inquiry Team Deployed
 
In response to the incident, Air Force Commander Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe has appointed a seven-member special investigation team to conduct a detailed inquiry into the crash.
 
Flight Details
 
The training aircraft took off from the SLAF’s main base in Katunayake at 7:27 AM and crashed at approximately 7:55 AM while on a routine training mission.
 
Further investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.
