Deshbandu Tennakoon Granted Permission to Receive Outside Food

Prisons Spokesperson Confirms Special Approval

The Department of Prisons has granted approval for former Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) Deshbandu Tennakoon, who is currently in remand custody, to receive meals from outside.

Tennakoon, who was remanded following his surrender to the Matara Magistrate’s Court in connection with the Weligama shooting incident, had requested permission to receive food from home. Prisons Department Spokesperson Gamini B. Dissanayake had earlier stated that the request was under review, and necessary actions would be taken based on feasibility.

Following this, authorities have now granted him permission to receive three meals a day from outside sources. However, these meals must be delivered during the designated prison meal distribution times and will be subject to inspection by prison officials.

It is noteworthy that the government allocates LKR 500 per day for meals per prisoner. Since Tennakoon will now be receiving food externally, the prison department will save this amount for the 13-day period from March 22 to April 3.

Tennakoon was taken into custody nearly 20 days after a warrant was issued against him in connection with the Weligama shooting. He is currently being held at the Thaldena Prison in Thambuththegama until April 3, as per court orders.
