Excise Department Introduces Budget Liquor Bottle to Counter Illicit Kasippu

In a bid to curb the consumption of illicit kasippu, the Excise Department has launched an affordable quarter bottle of liquor, priced under Rs. 600. This new 180ml bottle, containing 25% alcohol, is designed to offer a safer alternative to unregulated brews often consumed by underprivileged communities.

The initiative, which received approval from the Committee on Public Finance (COPF) last week, aims to replace dangerous, unregulated spirits with a government-sanctioned option. The production will be sourced from molasses, primarily manufactured at Pelwatta Sugar Industries and Sevanagala Sugar Factory.

Authorities believe this move will significantly reduce health risks associated with illicit liquor while providing consumers with a safer and standardized alternative at an accessible price point.
