The sacred Thaipusam Festival at Inuvil Kandhaswamy Temple is set to take place on February 11, with the highly anticipated Global Perahera (Ulagap Perumancham) street procession.
Thousands of devotees from across Sri Lanka and around the world are expected to participate in this grand spiritual celebration.
Pre-Event Preparations Underway A preparatory meeting was held today (Monday) at the Inuvil Arivayalam Hall, where temple authorities, local health officers, and municipal officials discussed essential arrangements for the festival. Key decisions included:
• Health & Hygiene Monitoring: Public health inspectors will oversee the quality and hygiene of sweets and food items sold within the temple premises.
• Drinking Water Facilities: The local council will set up clean drinking water stations for devotees.
• Traffic Management: Authorities will ensure smooth traffic flow during the event.
• Temporary Market Stalls: Specific areas have been allocated for vendors, with regulations in place.
Sacred Rituals & Key Events on Thaipusam Day 5:30 AM – Special Poojas & Abhishekam: The day’s rituals will begin with sacred abhishekam (ritual bathing) and special prayers at the Inuvil Kandhaswamy Temple.
Milk Pot Procession (Paalkudam Bavanai) – Maruthanarmadam Pallappa Vairavar Temple:
• Devotees can obtain paalkudam tickets from the temple.
• The temple will provide all necessary materials, including milk pots and brass vessels. Pre-registration is required.
Kavadi Procession: Following the milk pot procession, devotees will carry beautifully decorated kavadis as an act of devotion.
Traditional Paddy Harvest & Pongal Ceremony:
• Paddy will be harvested from the temple’s sacred fields at Sanghuveli, transported to the temple in a traditional bullock cart, and ritually processed into rice.
• The freshly milled rice will be used to prepare Pongal, a sacred offering to Lord Murugan.
• Devotees wishing to participate in the Pongal ceremony can either bring their own items or obtain Pongal materials directly from the temple (advance registration required).
Cultural Performances & Evening Poojas:
• During the Pongal celebrations, various traditional dance and music performances will take place at the temple’s Manimandapam.
• The Vasantha Mandapam Pooja will be held at 6:30 PM, followed by the highlight of the event—the Grand Procession (Ulagap Perumancham).
Grand Procession & Cultural Extravaganza Lord Arumugam, along with Goddess Valli and Deivanai, will embark on the grand Global Perahera, blessing devotees along the streets.
The streets will be filled with vibrant traditional performances and cultural showcases, making this year’s procession a truly mesmerizing experience.
This year’s Thirumanjam (holy chariot) has been newly painted and refurbished, adding to the magnificence of the event.
