Japan Extends Support to Strengthen Fair Trade and Market Development in Sri Lanka


The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) have pledged their support for policy reforms and institutional enhancements in Sri Lanka to ensure the supply of high-quality goods and services while safeguarding both consumers and producers.
 
During a meeting held today (12) at the Presidential Secretariat, representatives from JICA and JFTC engaged in discussions with Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumaranayake, Secretary to the President. The discussions focused on fostering a competitive market in Sri Lanka by promoting fair trade practices, which in turn would strengthen consumer and producer protection.
 
The Japanese delegation highlighted how Japan’s economic progress has been significantly driven by competitive trade policies. They elaborated on the role of such policies in safeguarding consumer rights and encouraging innovation.
 
Dr. Kumaranayake emphasized that Sri Lanka’s upcoming budget will address essential policy changes aimed at elevating market standards and ensuring fair trade. He also provided the Japanese representatives with insights into these proposed economic measures.
 
The meeting was attended by Senior Additional Secretary to the President, Rusell Aponsu, along with JICA representatives Tetsuya Yamada, Arisa Inada, Yuri Horrita, and Namal Ralapanawa. Representing JFTC were Y. Sakuma, Y. Asahina, Y. Fukushima, and M. Takeuchi.
