Mullaitivu Base Hospital faced a temporary disruption in outpatient medical services today due to a shortage of doctors.
Patients who arrived for treatment were left without medical attention, prompting widespread concerns among the public.
In response, concerned citizens lodged complaints with Vanni District Member of Parliament Thuraiyurasa Raviharan.
Taking swift action, the MP immediately contacted the Regional Director of Health Services for Mullaitivu and urged them to deploy an alternative doctor to restore medical services.
Following his intervention, MP Raviharan personally visited the hospital to assess the situation.
He engaged in discussions with the medical staff on duty and interacted with the affected patients to understand their grievances firsthand.
Addressing the media after his visit, the MP expressed deep concern over the ongoing medical shortages in the Mullaitivu District.
“The demand for healthcare services here is immense.
The Regional Director of Health Services had already informed me of the critical need for more medical staff, not only at Mullaitivu Base Hospital but also at other hospitals across the district.
We have already brought this issue to the attention of the Minister of Health, and assurances have been given to address these shortages.”
MP Raviharan further revealed that on Wednesday, he received multiple complaints from patients stating that no doctors were available at the hospital’s outpatient department, causing severe distress among the public.
“Upon receiving these complaints, I immediately contacted the Regional Health Director, who assured me that steps would be taken to deploy an alternative doctor without delay.
Following this, I personally visited the hospital to assess the ground situation.
I am pleased to note that an additional doctor has now been assigned, and medical services have resumed.”
The MP emphasized the urgent need for a permanent solution to the ongoing shortage of medical professionals in Mullaitivu.
“The lack of adequate medical personnel must be addressed immediately to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services for the people of Mullaitivu.
The government must take swift action to resolve this crisis,” he stated.
The situation highlights the broader issue of healthcare resource shortages in the Mullaitivu District, underscoring the need for long-term strategic solutions to ensure uninterrupted medical care for the region’s residents.
