Colombo Fort Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali has ordered the remand of Badulla District Member of Parliament Chamara Sampath Dassanayake until April 1st.

The MP was arrested earlier today on three charges and produced before the court, where he was granted bail for two charges but remanded in custody for the third.

Dassanayake had appeared before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption this morning to provide a statement. Following this, he was arrested by commission officials on charges related to financial fraud.

He was then presented before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, where Magistrate Lakmali granted him bail for two charges under a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and two personal sureties of Rs. 5 million each. However, he was ordered to be remanded until April 1st over the third charge.

Additionally, the court imposed a foreign travel ban on the MP and instructed him to surrender his passport to the court.

Dassanayake was arrested on allegations of misappropriating Rs. 1 million from the Sri Lanka Bank during his tenure as the Chief Minister of Uva Province. The funds were initially allocated for purchasing school bags for students but were allegedly diverted for his personal foundation.
