MP Shiritharan Responds to Criticism Over Not Standing in DCC Meeting

Jaffna District MP Shiritharan has addressed criticism for not standing up when Minister Chandrasegaram entered the DCC meeting.

Speaking exclusively to the North Beat website, MP Shiritharan defended his position, emphasizing his consistent approach in such meetings. “I have no history of standing up in DCC meetings, even when the chairman or ministers are present.

This has been my practice, not only now but also during the leadership of individuals like Douglas and the Ainkayan administration. We are all Members of Parliament, and there is no requirement for us to salute ministers,” he stated.

Shiritharan explained that while government staff members are required to show respect to chairpersons and ministers as part of their roles, MPs are not bound by the same protocols. However, he highlighted that he maintains basic courtesies.

“Out of courtesy, I always greet and shake hands with Minister Chandrasegaram while standing. On that particular day, I also stood up while shaking hands with the minister, but I see no need to stand up whenever they enter a meeting,” he clarified.

The remarks have sparked conversations about decorum and protocol within official meetings, with MP Shiritharan asserting that his actions align with the democratic equality and independence of MPs.
