Saree Controversy Disrupts Combined Maths Evaluation, Center Relocated

Last Thursday (16th), Combined Mathematics teachers were barred from entering the Advanced Level (A/L) exam evaluation center at Pannipitiya Dharmapala Vidyalaya for not adhering to a saree-only dress code.

School security guards, acting on orders from the principal, refused entry to the teachers, sparking heated protests.

The situation escalated into a confrontation, drawing police intervention.

In response to the controversy, the Department of Examinations closed the center and relocated it to its own premises, where evaluations resumed without disruption.

The incident has sparked outrage from the Ceylon Teachers’ Union, which criticized the principal’s actions and vowed to address the matter.

The saree dress code debate has reignited discussions about workplace attire and the need for fair policies in education settings.
