Point Pedro, December 12: A team from the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health, led by Community Medicine Consultant Dr. Prabha Abhayakoon, visited the Point Pedro Base Hospital today to assess the public health situation following the recent floods that have significantly impacted the region.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that two individuals have died from leptospirosis, commonly known as rat fever, at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. These deaths are part of a recent outbreak, which has caused heightened concern in the region.

The Northern Province is likely to face heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours, with an estimated 75 mm of rain expected.

As of this evening, an unidentified fever has claimed the lives of seven individuals in the Northern Province. To expedite containment efforts, the Northern Province Governor N. Vethanayagan has advised the Jaffna Regional Director of Health Services (RDHS), Dr. A. Ketheeswaran, to deploy personnel from other health divisions in the district if necessary.

Jaffna, Wednesday: The Northern Unemployed Graduates Union (NUGU) has called for a non-violent protest on Friday to draw attention to the plight of unemployed graduates in the region. The protest is scheduled to take place in front of the Jaffna District Secretariat at 8:30 AM.
