Speaker Urged to Take Action Against MP Over Obscene Remarks on Attorney Swasthika Arulingam


Chief Government Whip Calls for Disciplinary Measures in Parliament
 
Chief Government Whip and Minister Bimal Rathnayake today urged the Speaker to take appropriate action against a Member of Parliament who allegedly made obscene remarks about Attorney Swasthika Arulingam.
 
Raising a special statement in Parliament, Minister Rathnayake emphasized that under Standing Order 91 (U), any MP making defamatory or inappropriate remarks during parliamentary proceedings must be subjected to the Speaker’s ruling. He further noted that the Speaker has the authority to order the removal of such remarks from the Hansard and take disciplinary action against the concerned MP.
 
Referring to a report that had been sent to the Prime Minister, Minister Rathnayake stated that the MP’s comments violated parliamentary ethics and contravened Standing Order 91 (U). He urged the Speaker to investigate the matter and take necessary action in accordance with the relevant standing orders.
