Sword-Wielding Gang Attacks Youths at Arayampathy Playground: Two Injured

By Kanagarasa Saravanan

A brutal sword attack by a five-member gang left two individuals seriously injured at the Arayampathy Maha Vidyalayam playground in Batticaloa.

The incident occurred on Thursday (20) at around 6 PM while a group of young men were engaged in a game under floodlights.

According to police sources, the armed assailants stormed the field, chasing and attacking some of the players with swords before fleeing the scene.

The injured victims were rushed to the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital and are currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.

Authorities believe the attack was a result of an ongoing rivalry stemming from a previous altercation at a temple over a year ago.

The police have launched an investigation and are actively pursuing the suspects, who remain in hiding.

The incident has left the local community in shock and fear, as the attack mirrored the violent tactics of the infamous “Aava Group” from Jaffna.

Law enforcement officials have assured that efforts are underway to apprehend those responsible and restore a sense of security in the area.
