A shocking incident unfolded on Tuesday (18th) at around 7:00 PM in Eravur’s Mailambaveli area, where two off-duty police officers, allegedly intoxicated and dressed in civilian clothing, assaulted a businessman using their helmets.
The officers, who were traveling on a motorcycle, stopped the businessman after he overtook them, accused him of reckless driving, and then physically attacked him before fleeing the scene.
Incident Details The victim, identified as Gunaratnam Mathikumar, was riding his motorcycle from Vantharumoolai towards Batticaloa when the two officers, also on a motorcycle, intercepted him in front of the local Grama Sevaka’s office.
Claiming that he was riding improperly, the officers forced him to stop and proceeded to assault him, striking his head with their helmets.
As a result, the businessman sustained serious injuries. Hearing the commotion, local residents quickly gathered at the scene and prevented the officers from escaping.
They immediately alerted the police emergency hotline (1919). Shortly after, a team from Eravur Police arrived in a three-wheeler to investigate the matter.
Upon questioning, the responding officers discovered that the attackers were intoxicated and instructed them to accompany them to the police station.
Dramatic Escape However, as they neared the police station, the two officers managed to escape by speeding off on their motorcycle instead of entering the station.
Investigations later revealed that both officers were attached to the judicial division of the Eravur Police Station and had left their duty post earlier that day after signing off on their assignments.
Following the incident, the injured businessman formally lodged a complaint against the two officers.
A court arrest warrant was issued against them at 11:00 AM on the same day, but they have since gone into hiding.
The Eravur Police are now conducting further investigations to apprehend the two fugitive officers and take necessary legal action.
