Former Deputy Minister V. Muralitharan, widely known as Karuna Amman, has strongly criticized the recent travel restrictions imposed on him by the British government, calling it a “political drama.” Speaking at the candidate introduction event for the Kalkudah constituency under the Eastern Tamil Alliance today, he questioned why the UK government had not considered him a criminal when he was imprisoned there in 2006.
“When I was arrested by the British government in 2006, I was imprisoned for eight months. If I was a criminal, why didn’t they identify me as one back then? Why impose restrictions now, just because I have re-entered politics? This is nothing but a political game,” he asserted.
Karuna Amman further stated that he had returned to Sri Lanka under the full protection of the British authorities, landing at the Bandaranaike International Airport with official clearance.
“The formation of our alliance has gained global attention. Suddenly, after all these years, the UK government has imposed a ban on me. What are they afraid of? Are we begging for something? This ban never existed before, but now that we have joined forces politically, they have imposed it. This is nothing but a political drama. Back in 2006, they arrested me, kept me in prison, and now, nearly two decades later, they have discovered a crime? What kind of foolish government is this? If I was truly guilty, they should have handcuffed me and taken action back then. Instead, they ensured my safe return to Sri Lanka with official protocols,” he said.
Karuna Amman further accused certain diaspora groups of collaborating with external forces to suppress the Eastern Tamil community.
“This is a direct attack on the existence of Eastern Tamils. Unfortunately, some individuals living abroad are cooperating with these efforts,” he added.
