Dr. Sivachandran Sivaganam has taken to social media to express his frustration and disapproval of the ongoing criticisms and accusations against Dr. Sathyamoorthy, a prominent figure associated with the development of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. While acknowledging that no institution or individual is without flaws, Dr. Sivaganam highlighted the significant strides made by the hospital during Dr. Sathyamoorthy’s tenure.
From securing successful foreign aid to driving infrastructural development, Dr. Sathyamoorthy’s contributions transformed the hospital into one of Sri Lanka’s finest medical facilities despite limited government support.
The controversy reached new heights recently when questions were raised about conducting postmortems at the hospital. Critics attacked Dr. Sathyamoorthy for decisions that, as per Dr. Sivaganam, are governed by legal frameworks rather than personal discretion. “What kind of hatred is this, to attack someone for carrying out routine procedures dictated by law?
If there are allegations, let them be addressed legally,” Sivaganam urged, criticizing those who disrupt hospital operations under the guise of seeking justice. He also called out certain individuals, including fellow doctors, for spreading misinformation and instigating public anger through social media. He accused them of exploiting public sentiment for monetary gains while failing to educate the masses about the realities of medical practice.
Dr. Sivaganam expressed concern over the trend of glorifying such disruptive behavior, cautioning that it brings no benefit to society. Instead, he labeled it as an act of opportunistic heroism that demeans the medical profession and institutions. He posed serious questions to the government:
Does the government condone such unlawful acts carried out under the pretense of holding officials accountable?
Is this chaos a deliberate strategy to destabilize the administration in Tamil regions?
Finally, he called upon the Jaffna district NPP MPs to address these concerns and take a firm stand. In conclusion, Dr. Sivaganam strongly condemned the defamatory campaigns against Dr. Sathyamoorthy and urged society to think rationally and responsibly, warning against becoming a laughingstock in front of other communities.
The ball now lies in the government’s court to decide if it will allow such chaos to persist or take definitive action.
